franklin county, the middle city here in columbus. the capital city of montgomery county is is dayton and hamilton county is cincinnati in the southwest. so barack obama did very well in the cities throughout the entire state. the keys to watch tonight, if mitt romney has a chance at winning ohio, we should know this early on, once hamilton county starts to check in, why is that so critical? hamilton county had not gone democratic since 1964 until barack obama won that county by 8 points four years ago. it went blue when it was so red for 40 long years. another key to watch here up here in the northeast, a lot of people grew up in cincinnati, hamilton county have moved to the surrounding counties here where the suburbs have now moved away from the city. this is warren county. look at the vote margin from 2008 with john mccain getting 68% of the vote. seems like a great and healthy number, right? look what george bush did in that same county in 2004. he picked up 72% of the vote. mitt romney needs to be around these george bush numbers

let's check in with erin burnett in columbus, ohio, the state capital. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: the secretary of state has just been briefing reporters gathered here to try to figure out which way this swing state will go. right now, we are getting new numbers out of cuyahoga county. as you said, with the number we have reporting so far, we have an 11 point lead for the president but that's just what we have reporting so far. we have a long way to go. there are some new numbers just coming out of cuyahoga county and cleveland, which is so crucial for the president, where mitt romney needs to close that margin. marty savidge has those numbers. what is the latest you're hearing? >> reporter: right now, the new numbers show that the president has 188,049 votes to mitt romney's 80,020 votes. that would indicate that president obama is actually increasing his lead here in cuyahoga county. i should also point out provisional ballots. there is a concern now that the number of them being used, especially in this county, may be on the rise. i was just talking to jayne planto
